More planning on the frame.

I did a deck on scetch with main thought on a chain line. This was done after aquiring some inspiration from other people's work. Raising lowest line of frame solved lower chain line easily. Higher line is more difficult since it crosses frame on it's way to rear wheel.

One solution would be to build rear fork separately so that this would make necessary sideway shift. But since I want to make frame sides from single piece because of visual reasons I want to come up with another solution.

This is one option I came up with. If I make a hole on a frame I can run chain through it. This might also hold chains in place and prevent chains from dropping off.

I need to think this through. There are some ingredients of catastrophe in this plan. It might be a good idea to solve this before actual building phase.

Some measurements of construction.

I was on a drawing table the other day and scetched a bit. After setting some measurements on a frame design it seems that I really need to think about chain line. It would also be really helpful to have wheel set and cranks at hand so I could do some real life measuring and fitting.

Some measurements have now been decided. Wheels will be 26 inch set. Width will be decided later. Front cranks 30cm from ground and 70cm from saddle. Front rork angle to frame, roughly 60-65 degrees. Rest will follow.

Here is the scetched idea with some apparent problems.

Preliminary planning

Building bisycle from wood is not a new idea. Actually first bikes were all made from wood. Even now days bike frames and rims are sometimes made from wood. It is just not so common since wood requires a lot of manual labor that can not be made automatically. And that makes wonders on the price tag.

But for a craftsman that is not used to metal this is a nice project. My plan is to start out with 18mm plywood for the sake of simplicity. After first consept is done there might be continuation built from solid wood.

I have now pondered on the construction and decided to proceed with a sort of sandwich construction. Frame and rear fork will be made from 2 flat pieces that are about 15cm apart. This might bring some issues with chain line but those will be solved on the later state of planning.

Alkusanat

Keksin eräänä päivänä että olisi hienoa rakentaa fillari puusta. Tietty renkaat ja muutamia muita osia on pakko hankkia valmiina, mutta lähtökohtaisesti tarkoituksena on pitäytyä mahdollisimman pitkälle puussa.

Muutama skissi on jo piirrettynä, mutta ajanpuutteen vuoksi projektin varsinainen toteuttaminen voi venyä pitkällekin. Mutta kenellä harrasteiden kanssa nyt kiire olisi?

Aion jatkossa kirjoittaa pääasiassa englanniksi, koska aihe on varsin marginaalinen.
